Privacy Policy

Last updated: 3 October 2026.

FlashOtter ("the app") is a vocabulary-learning app made by the FlashOtter team, Texas, USA ("we"). This policy explains what happens to your information when you use the app.

In short: your learning data stays on your phone. The app has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. We don't collect, receive or sell your personal data.

1. What the app stores, and where

Everything you do in FlashOtter is saved only on your device, inside the app's own storage:

The app doesn't send this data to us or anyone else. We have no servers that receive it. If you uninstall the app or clear its data in your phone's settings, it is deleted.

Device backups. If backup is turned on for your phone, Android may include FlashOtter's saved progress and settings in your device backup (for example to your Google account), or copy it when you move to a new phone, so you can carry on where you left off. This is controlled by your phone's settings and handled by Google under its own privacy policy, not by us. We can't see these backups.

2. Internet use

The app's own features work offline. The app is built so that it can't connect to the internet by itself: it contains no ads, analytics, tracking or crash-reporting tools and loads no web content. The internet permission is there for the phone services the app uses: speech recognition (section 3) and Google Play purchases (section 5).

3. Microphone and speaking (optional)

Some activities let you answer by speaking. The microphone is used only while you are speaking an answer, and only after you have allowed it. You can turn speaking off in those activities or in Settings, and you can always type or tap instead.

FlashOtter turns your speech into text using your phone's own speech-recognition service. FlashOtter does not record, store or send your voice - it only receives the text of what was recognised, checks it against the answer, and then discards it. When your phone can recognise the language on the device (for example after you install an offline voice pack), your speech stays on your phone. Otherwise your phone's speech service, usually provided by Google, may process your voice on its servers under its own privacy policy.

4. Text-to-speech

Words and sentences are read aloud by your phone's built-in text-to-speech engine. The text is not sent to us.

5. Purchases

Subscriptions, when available, are bought through Google Play. Google handles the payment; we never see or store your payment details. The app asks Google Play whether you have an active subscription and keeps the answer on your phone. Google Play gives us the order and subscription details it gives every developer (for example the order number, product, date and country), which we use only for accounting, refunds and support. You can manage or cancel a subscription in the Google Play Store app.

6. Problem reports

If you report a problem with a word card or a course page, the report (the card, or what was on the page, and your note) is kept on your phone.

7. Children

FlashOtter is intended for people aged 13 and over. The app doesn't collect personal information from anyone, including children. When you first open it, the app asks your year of birth once; it keeps only whether you're old enough to use it, on your phone, and doesn't store the year.

8. Your choices and rights

Because your data stays on your device, you are in control of it: you can change or delete your name, journal and word sets in the app, and you can delete everything by clearing the app's data or uninstalling it. We hold no personal data about you, so there is nothing for us to access, correct, export or delete on our side. If you have a question about your privacy, or a request under the laws where you live (for example the GDPR in the EU/UK, or US state privacy laws), contact us and we'll help.

9. Security

Your data stays inside the app's private storage on your phone, which other apps can't read. Keep your phone protected with a screen lock.

10. Third-party content

The app includes artwork, sounds and dictionary data used under their licences (see Settings > Credits). They are bundled in the app; using them doesn't send any data anywhere.

11. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy - for example if we add an optional account or cloud backup - we'll update it here and in the app, and change the date at the top. We won't start collecting personal data without telling you first.
